Font-aholic

22 Nov

I will admit that I once was a font-aholic. I loved using new and exciting fonts for everything, including papers and assignments. And yes…Comic Sans, Curlz MT and Papyrus were my favorite.

I can now appreciate the standard typeface of Times New Roman 12 and Helvetica, which Gurak and Lannon suggest to use. However, it makes me wonder, when do we use those other fonts? Are they just for graphic designers? Am I ever allowed to use the font of my choice? And does my audience really enjoy reading the same Times New Roman on every document?

I too was a little disappointed when Gurak and Lannon said to avoid decorative fonts. However, I think it depends on the kind of document. I feel like for graphic designers the font is part of the design, whereas in technical documents the font acts more simply as the text and is there for information rather tha design.
